Why Eating Soy is Dangerous
It is still amazing how many soy products are sold as "health food". It reminds me of when being a vegetarian became a trend and soy made its way onto the common marketplace in the form of tofu, seitan, soy burgers, soy milk - you name it.

Soy was considered a health food until the early 2000s when there was an obvious rise in breast cancer. Scientists began to research more about soy being a possible culprit and the findings came to an unfortunate conclusion.

Soy has been linked not only to breast cancer but thyroid disease; such as hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer, infertility, autoimmune diseases and endocrine disruption.

Now you may ask "Why is it eaten is Asia?" Historically, soy was a "filler" of sorts in both agriculture and diet. In Asia it was used to help clear the fields for planting a food crop since it is known to be a nitrogen fixing agent. Historically in Western culture it was used to help hay grow but it was not seen fit for human consumption.

During World War Two it was an easy food substitute for starving populations since tofu was traditionally used to bulk up a meal in cases of low food supply but never used instead of an actual animal protein or vegetable.

In present day, soybeans are seen as a "biotech food" and in 2010 93% of soy across the world is genetically modified. As we know, genetically modified foods, or GMOs, have a great and negative impact on our health, in ways we may not even know yet because GMOs have not been present on this earth for very long. But as of now, cancer, autoimmune disease, childhood diabetes and infertility have all been connected to GMOs.

Soy protein which is used in soy "meat" products, soy milk and soy ice cream is basically industrial waste. In fact, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) refused to approve isolated soy protein as a safe food additive with the designation "Generally Recognized as Safe".

Here is why Soy is Dangerous

1. Soy contains phytic acid: Phytic acid is known to actually withdraw nutrients while it is being processed by your body. This is not a good thing, especially for growing children.

2. Soy contains phyto-estrogens: Phyto estrogens are plant based estrogens that mimic estrogen in our bodies. The leading cause of breast cancer, uterine fibroids and infertility are from estrogen dominance. This is why eating soy has been linked to these issues. Men are not safe either, since an abundance of estrogen can influence the production of testosterone and with this said there have been studies showing an increase in prostrate cancer on a high soy diet.

3. Soy is goitrogenic: Goitrogenic means something that suppresses the thyroid. When the thyroid is not working and not getting the necessary amount of iodine, hypothyroidism appears and also with the stagnation of the cells, which are not functioning properly, thyroid cancers are also possible.

4. Almost all soy is GMO: Soy is one of the biggest cash crops across the world and almost all of it is GMO. GMOs are unhealthy for your body and the planet. Do yourself and the earth a favor and say no to soy!

If you adhere to a vegetarian diet and need some alternatives here are some good ones:

High in protein: Quinoa, beans, nuts, butter, eggs,

Instead of soy milk: Almond Milk, Coconut Milk, Rice Milk
